How to Make the Most of Your Massage Session: Pre- and Post-Session Prep Tips

You’ve decided to invest in your horse’s wellness, and that’s a fantastic step toward a happier, more responsive partner. Whether you’re dealing with a performance horse or a beloved trail companion, bodywork is more than just a “spa day”—it’s a vital component of maintenance, injury prevention, and building trust.

But how do you ensure you’re getting the maximum benefit from every session? Here is my guide to preparing for—and following up on—our time together, so your horse can truly thrive.

Before the Session: Setting the Stage

Preparation doesn’t have to be complicated. A few small steps help your horse settle faster, so we can focus on the work:

  • Schedule Wisely: Try not to schedule a session during feeding time or immediately after a strenuous workout. A light, low-intensity ride or a day off is perfect. If your horse has just had a high-intensity session, their muscles may be too inflamed to respond effectively to bodywork. I also suggest no riding if possible for the remainder of the day of the massage.
  • The “Goldilocks” Environment: Ensure the massage space is relatively quiet and clean. A space where your horse feels safe and is free from constant distractions helps them drop into that relaxed state where the real release happens. A stall is great, but we can also work in the barn aisle or wash stall if the horse does not have a stall.
  • Share Your Insight: I know your horse best when I have your input. Before we start, tell me how they felt during your last few rides. Are they stiffer in one direction? Any new behavioral quirks or changes in how they react to the girth? This helps me focus on the areas that need it most.

After the Session: Supporting the Release

The work doesn’t stop when I leave the barn. The 24 to 72 hours following a session are critical for helping the body integrate the changes:

  • Hydration is Key: Ensure your horse has access to plenty of fresh water. Muscle release often encourages the flushing of toxins, and proper hydration supports that natural recovery process.
  • Ease into Movement: Avoid intense schooling immediately after a massage. A day of turnout or light walking is perfect. If you want to ride, keep it simple—lots of walking and stretching exercises—to allow their muscles to settle into their new range of motion.
  • Observe and Note: Watch for subtle shifts in movement, attitude, or comfort. Sometimes you’ll see the best results after 48 hours once the body has had a chance to fully process the work.

Your Role in the Process

My goal is to be your partner in your horse’s longevity. By taking these small steps, you’re not just booking a session—you’re actively participating in your horse’s health and performance.
